![]() Few people under the age of fifty know Knowland's story. Time has dimmed the memories of Californians and others. Not coincidentally, he ended the careers of several other major California Republicans. He ended his own family's political dynasty in California and gave the Democratic Brown family power that would last In a show of stubbornness, ambition, and self-assurance bordering on feelings of divine tight, Knowland took his state Republican Party down to defeat in 1958. ![]() The senator also had a dark and self-destructive side, and no biography would be complete without an examination of his tragic downfall. Yet few really knew him, for he was a shy man, with a stony countenance often mistaken for arrogance. Eisenhower, with whom he often disagreed, called him "impeccably honest, courageous, studious and serious" and praised him in particular for his leadership in the battle for civil rights legislation in 1957. He was a public figure recognized and respected by millions of Americans: Dwight D. He initiated an Asian policy that is still part of our international direction. Senate, Knowland was one of the most influential figures in America in those early cold war years. The senator was one of the finest statesmen of the 1950s, a man of principle who spoke his mind, stood behind his ideals, and damned the consequences. The last years of his life were unpleasant for many members of his family, but now, more than twenty years after his death, it is time to tell his story. ![]() We waited, however, until time had softened the pain for those close to the senator. Since that cold February day, we envisioned writing a biography of a man who was so influential in our professional lives and in the lives of so many Americans. Knowland, the former majority leader and editor of the Oakland Tribune, died in 1974.
